Garfield Jazz Transition News

Dear Garfield Jazz Community,

Today we announce the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in Garfield Jazz History.

Ted Howard recently announced that Clarence Acox is retiring. We all feel such deep respect and admiration for Clarence who, in his 40+ year tenure at Garfield, has touched the lives of thousands of students and families. We will find a way to honor him, his legendary career and all of his contributions to the Garfield community, and will update you once we know what that looks like.

In the meantime, we want to introduce and welcome Jared Sessink to Garfield High School, where he will serve as the director of not only Jazz but also Concert and Marching band. Jared joins Garfield from Washington Middle School, where he has served as band director for the past 3 years. Many of our current Garfield students have experienced Jared’s leadership at WMS and can confirm that he brings great passion, energy and innovation to Garfield Jazz – and will keep Garfield swinging into next year and beyond.

Warmly,
The Garfield Jazz Foundation Board
